Why We Exist
Many of our nation’s heroes return home carrying invisible wounds—the lasting effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These injuries can impact memory, mood, emotional regulation, and physical well-being, often leading to isolation, despair, and—in too many cases—suicide.
Despite the overwhelming need, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is not currently offered by the VA for treating TBI and PTSD. Veterans seeking relief are left with limited options and must often turn to outside resources for help.
Recognizing this gap in care and to address this crisis, the State of North Carolina passed House Bill 50 in 2019, authorizing the use of HBOT for veterans suffering from these conditions. The results have been nothing short of extraordinary, with veterans experiencing meaningful improvements in quality of life, mental clarity, and emotional resilience. The need for expanded access continues to grow.
That’s where we come in.
Our Mission
HBOT4Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring hope, health, and purpose to veterans suffering from TBI and PTSD through fully funded access to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).
Providing Life-Changing Treatment
We offer 40 fully funded HBOT sessions to qualifying veterans through a growing network of preferred clinics.
Delivering Integrated Healing
Our program supports whole-person recovery—addressing the brain, body, and mind—addressing the full scope of each veteran’s needs.
Reducing Veteran Suicide
By healing the brain and addressing the underlying neurological injuries associated with PTSD and TBI, we aim to end emotional suffering and suicidal ideation before it starts.
Achieving Measurable Outcomes
We focus on long-term improvements in cognitive clarity, emotional stability, and overall quality of life.
Empowering Veterans to Reclaim Their Lives
Every hero deserves more than symptom management—they deserve the opportunity to truly heal and rediscover their purpose.
A Journey of Healing and Renewal
Our pilot programs in 2021 and 2022, which provided HBOT treatment to 40 veterans, revealed the life-changing potential of this therapy. Veterans from as far back as the Vietnam War, along with their families, have shared powerful stories of transformation and healing—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
These testimonies are more than heartwarming—they’re evidence of impact. They demonstrate the profound healing potential of HBOT and fuel our mission to make this therapy accessible to more veterans who deserve a real path to recovery.
A Brighter Tomorrow
At HBOT4Heroes, we’re building more than access to treatment—we’re creating a community of healing and hope. The impact of this work doesn’t stop with the individual. It extends to families, neighborhoods, and communities across North Carolina and beyond.
Through focused, veteran-centered initiatives, we are improving the lives of those who served and strengthening the communities they call home.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This process increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, which promotes faster healing and reduces inflammation. It is particularly beneficial for conditions like traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other service-related injuries.
How does HBOT help veterans with TBI and PTSD?
HBOT helps by increasing oxygen supply to damaged brain tissue, which can reduce inflammation, promote healing, and improve cognitive function. Many veterans report improvements in memory, mood, and overall mental clarity after undergoing HBOT, making it an effective therapy for TBI and PTSD.
Is HBOT safe for everyone?
HBOT is generally safe for most people, but like any medical treatment, it may have some risks and contraindications. It’s important to undergo a thorough medical evaluation before starting therapy. Conditions like untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung) are contraindications for HBOT.
How many HBOT sessions are typically required?
The number of HBOT sessions required can vary based on the condition being treated and its severity. For veterans with TBI or PTSD, a standard treatment plan typically includes 40 sessions. Additional sessions may be recommended by the treating clinician based on individual progress.
HBOT4Heroes fully funds 40 HBOT sessions for qualified veterans. For those who require continued care beyond the initial program, our preferred clinic, Extivita-RTP, generously offers a 50% discount to veterans and active-duty service members.
What can I expect during an HBOT session?
During an HBOT session, you will sit in a chamber while breathing pure oxygen. The chamber will be pressurized to about 2-3 times normal atmospheric pressure. Sessions typically last around 60-90 minutes. You may feel pressure in your ears, similar to being on an airplane, but this can be relieved by swallowing or yawning.
Are there any side effects of HBOT?
Most people tolerate HBOT well, but some may experience mild side effects such as ear discomfort, sinus pressure, or temporary vision changes. These effects usually resolve shortly after treatment. Serious side effects are rare but can include oxygen toxicity or barotrauma (pressure-related injuries).
How is HBOT different from other treatments for TBI and PTSD?
Unlike medications that mainly address symptoms, HBOT targets the underlying cause by promoting healing at the cellular level. It’s a non-invasive treatment that can complement other therapies and help reduce reliance on medications, offering a holistic approach to recovery.
How do I qualify for HBOT through HBOT4Heroes?
To qualify for HBOT through HBOT4Heroes, veterans typically need to provide documentation of their service and medical history. Start the application process here to determine eligibility: https://hbot4heroes.org/apply-now/
Is HBOT covered by insurance?
Coverage for HBOT varies depending on your insurance plan and the condition being treated. While some insurance companies cover HBOT for specific conditions, others may not. HBOT4Heroes works to provide this therapy at no cost to qualifying veterans through donations and grants.
How can I support HBOT4Heroes and its mission?
You can support HBOT4Heroes by donating, organizing fundraisers, spreading awareness about the benefits of HBOT, or becoming a brand ambassador. Every contribution helps provide veterans with the life-changing therapy they need to heal and thrive.
Where do I go for the HBOT treatments?
All HBOT treatments funded by HBOT4Heroes currently take place at Extivita-RTP in Durham, NC. Veterans must travel to this location and commit to completing 40 sessions as part of the program. For North Carolina residents not local to this area, funding may be available to cover the cost of hotel accommodations during your time in Durham to receive treatment.
