Healing the Mind and Restoring Purpose through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Graham Horne
Chief, USCG, Retired.
Graham Horne retired from the United States Coast Guard in 2022 as a Chief after serving nine years of active duty and additional years as a reservist. Alongside his military career, he spent decades in law enforcement, beginning as a police officer in 1996 and later working with the Sheriff’s Office. His professional life was marked by dedication to public service—but also exposure to trauma, high stress, and emotional exhaustion.
Improved Brain Function and Mental Clarity
After about ten sessions, Graham began noticing clearer thinking, better memory, and reduced brain fog. He found himself able to retain what he read and think more sharply—a drastic improvement from his previously clouded mental state.
Restored Creativity and Neurological Function
An unexpected benefit was the return of his musical ability. Graham, who had played guitar since age 16, realized that his coordination and rhythm had significantly improved. He even picked up a harmonica—an instrument he had never played before—and found himself learning it with ease. He described the experience as though “a part of [his] brain was opened up and healed.”
Better Sleep and Physical Health
HBOT also dramatically improved his sleep, which had been severely disrupted by years of alcohol use and stress. Combined with his new diet and lifestyle changes, Graham’s energy, mood, and overall vitality improved substantially. He was able to come off multiple medications for cholesterol, blood pressure, migraines, and other health conditions.
Emotional Healing and Advocacy
Graham’s emotional transformation was profound. He describes HBOT as one of the “best tools” in his recovery, helping him find balance and stability without dependence on alcohol or medication. Now, he is committed to spreading awareness and encouraging other veterans, police officers, and first responders to seek help and consider HBOT as part of their healing journey.
Graham Horne’s story embodies hope and resilience. From a life overshadowed by trauma and addiction to one filled with clarity, creativity, and renewed purpose, HBOT played a pivotal role in his recovery. His experience underscores the importance of comprehensive care for veterans and first responders, showing that healing is possible with the right tools and determination.
