Major Jim Capers served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps, coming from humble beginnings in Bishopville, South Carolina. Raised on a farm, he joined the Marines as a young man and went on to fight in two wars. Over the course of his career, he sustained extensive combat injuries, including multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and shrapnel injuries from a Claymore mine that caused severe internal damage. Now 88 years old, Major Capers is one of the most highly decorated Marines in U.S. history and continues to be admired for his service, resilience, and leadership.

Improved Mobility and Physical Function

Despite extensive leg injuries that once made walking extremely difficult, Major Capers began moving more freely. He experienced increased flexibility and strength in his legs, was able to walk better, and at times climbed stairs without assistance. After completing his dives, he no longer considered knee replacement surgery, as his knees felt significantly better.

Pain Reduction

Although he still lives with embedded bullet fragments and long-term injuries, Major Capers reported noticeable reductions in pain and an overall improvement in how his body feels. While he still occasionally uses a wheelchair, he described feeling stronger and more capable than before beginning HBOT.

Cognitive Clarity and Mental Awareness

Both Major Capers and those around him noticed improved mental clarity as the dives progressed. Cognitive testing conducted before and after the HBOT program showed measurable improvement. He became more engaged, more talkative, and sharper in conversation—changes that were especially notable given his age and extensive history of trauma.

PTSD Support and Emotional Well-Being

While HBOT did not erase the painful memories of war, Major Capers believes it helped lessen the intensity of his PTSD symptoms. He described feeling better overall and more at peace after sessions. The therapy, combined with meaningful conversations and connection, helped him cope more effectively with long-standing emotional burdens.

Major Jim Capers’ experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy highlights the profound potential of HBOT to support healing—even decades after injury. Through improved mobility, reduced pain, greater mental clarity, and emotional support, HBOT has enhanced his quality of life and helped him continue sharing his story with future generations. His journey stands as a powerful testament to resilience, service, and the lifelong need to care for those who have borne the cost of war.
