At HBOT4Heroes, we believe that every veteran deserves access to life-saving treatments that can improve their quality of life. This week, we had the incredible opportunity to highlight the power of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on Talk of the Town with Henry Hinton, where two veterans, Pastor Willie Bernard and Stan Harwood, shared their inspiring journeys toward healing.
Pastor Willie Bernard’s Story: Overcoming Cancer, Heart Failure & Kidney Failure
Pastor Willie Bernard’s journey has been one of resilience and faith. He faced prostate cancer, a bleeding bladder, heart failure, kidney failure, and multiple blood transfusions—yet despite his critical condition, the VA denied his request for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Determined to take control of his health, Pastor Bernard sought HBOT treatment at Duke University in Durham. He was prescribed 40 treatments, but after just 15 sessions, his bladder bleeding completely stopped. After completing his full treatment plan, Pastor Bernard says he is feeling better than ever. Now, he looks forward to a “tune-up” at Extivita, where he can continue benefiting from the healing power of HBOT.
Stan Harwood’s Journey: Fighting Leukemia & Restoring His Health
For veteran Stan Harwood, HBOT became a beacon of hope after his leukemia diagnosis. Encouraged by another veteran who had successfully undergone treatment, Stan decided to start HBOT at Extivita in Durham.
So far, he has completed 18 dives, and the results have been astounding—his white blood cell count, which was initially low, has now returned to normal. He continues treatment, hopeful for even greater improvements and advocating for more veterans to have access to HBOT.
The Need for Expanded Access to HBOT for Veterans
Both Pastor Bernard and Stan Harwood have experienced firsthand the life-changing benefits of HBOT, but they also know how difficult it can be for veterans to access this treatment. That’s why they, along with HBOT4Heroes, are advocating for expanded HBOT access at the state and national levels.
